You may look at external noise as a source but I have found that even my sloppiest DMX prototype seems fairly robust.

It looks like you have used an adaptation of Kathy Quinlan's DMX-512 code and I would suggest starting there. I gave the same code a quick test run not too long ago and got the same result. It looks like it SHOULD work but I didn't have time to mess with it and abandoned it.

Maybe someone else can shed more light?
