As already stated, there should be no reason to have to stop the timer.

See http://www.keil.com/download/docs/intsio.zip.asp for an interrupt-driven, ring-buffered serial IO example.

I am currently using this very code in a project with up to 4 UARTs, a Timer, I2C, etc, etc - so you should have no problem at all with just 1 timer and 1 UART!
