Hi Dan,

How about "Keep it simple"?

What's wrong with an external clock IC? A 4060 IC and a 32 kHz crystal could provide a 2 Hz external interrupt and you never have to worry about complicated timing cycles and interrupts. It would provide the accuracy of the crystal which can be compensated for by a variable capacitor. That is about as good as you are going to get!

It's seems your way is to complicated for all of the type of 8051 derivatives.
