Are you absolutely sure that you can't do it using IAP ? You won't be able to call the built-in functions, but you should be able to execute the same SFR operations that the bootloader uses when it is running.

Of course, if your program fails, you will need the parallel programmer - if recovering a 6$ chip is a top priority.
