Thanks for your responses, Jez are you selling the core? And how much? Besides doing 16 bit calculations the main requirement is that the external data bus must be 16 bit. The application requirement is not complicated to justify using Motorola or other brands 16 bit chips as they use different instruction sets which will involve more investment.

Extended instructions to the 8051 instruction will be fine as some of the code was already running previously on 87C58 chip.
