In brief:
If you have an external device that requests the interrupt by setting a latch (external to the MCU) and your MCU is able to reset that latch, then the level triggered interrupt is suitable.
If the external device has not that latch and it simply requests the interrupt generating a pulse, then the you should use the edge triggered option. Edge triggered interrupts are used in most applications.
