I agree to that, certainly in the light of following statement:

The 12MHz is not the final value and neither is the board (but for checking the communication with the modem, this present board is identical to the one I'll be building later).

If 12 Mhz is not the final value, then any testing you do is probably just a waste of time. Changing the frequency will change timing/baud rate and will void any test results produced with the 12 Mhz crystal...
