An index.phtml file is necessary if you want to be able to send people to a directory such as http://www.8052.com/users/yourpage/. That will not display unless "yourpage" contains an index.phtml.

If all you want to do is upload graphics which you later embed in messages in this forum then all you need to do is upload the graphics file into your directory--no index.phtml file is necessary in that case.
