When you first apply power to the circuit, you need the reset pin of the micro be held low for sometime till the power supply stabilizes otherwise your processor hangs up.
Thats why you need a reset capacitor or reset chip.
Search the forum for reset and you will see along discussion with experts preferring a reset chip over the reset capacitor.
