#73484 - RE: Easy Target - OT
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Windows is the most common virus vector because it is the most common OS. The virus writers get the most bang for their buck by attacking Windows. I'll bet real money that if those of you running *nix ever succeed in your quest to switch the world to your OS, then we'll find out just how vulnerable your systems are. If anything appears to be foolproof, it's because there aren't enough fools fooling with it.

We'll just have to wait and see. :)

And if you believe that Outlook is the problem, read "The Cuckoo's Egg." Can anyone say GNU EMACS? Note also that this event predated Windows (and maybe even DOS!?).

I've read it. Fun and interesting read. Also relates to versions of operating systems that are now about, what, 25 years obsolete and back when the Internet was very much a "trust" environment.

Anyway, I'm certainly not saying that *nix is perfect nor has it always been perfect, and there will always be hackers. But it's one thing for an intelligent hacker to connect to your system and actively try to guess passwords, etc. and quite another for a virus to be installed by stealth by IE or Outlook when you visit a web page or open an email. I don't think you're going to see those kinds of viruses ever on Linux.

But we'll just have to wait and see.

Regards,
Craig Steiner
