Here is a very effective way to drive a relay from an 80C51 type I/O pin:



..this circuit is particularly useful if the relay coil drive is not +5 volts.

For a relay with a 5 volt coil it can be possible to let the PNP transistor drive the top side of the coil connection into a ground connection on the bottom side of the relay coil.
