Thanks to all for their time and inputs ( particularly Rob Klein, esp for the design tip of using appropriate caps ).

I plan to use the low voltage derivative with a 3.0 V regulator to avoid the complications at this stage while prototyping and then try my hand with mixing the voltages in future.
