I needed a "one size fits all" for my work. I chose SILABS C8051F040 for built in CAN, ADC's, DAC's, UART's, and many Digital IO lines. This chip covers all of my needs and though it's a bit pricy ($25USD for lots of 25), this systems it is designated for are so expensive that the price of the chip is vertually non-existant.
