I can reccomment the following:

Use for the columns one 4017 johnsoncounter, buffered by simple transistors.
Needed mpu I/O-lines: one for resetting the 4017 and one for clocking it.

Use for segments two cascaded 4094 serial in / parallel out shiftregisters with build in latches. on the outputs use 4050 buffers for segmentdriving.
Needed mpu I/O-lines: One strobe, one clock and one output enable.

If you use an extra ULN2003 as level shifter between I/O-ports of mpu and 4017/4094, it is possible to power 4094, 4017 and 4050 with 15 volts (if you use HEF family logic, NOT HCF which is 6V max) which will give your display more brightness.
