#81432 - Another power on/off technique
Responding to: ???'s previous message
This is a technique I use quite successfully.

Connect a PNP pass transistor emitter between the battery + and Vcc of the circuit to control. Base of the transistor is connected to the micro port pin. To turn on the circuit, you need to press the On button which is nothing but a switch between the transistor collector and emitter. Once the circuit is on, the micro can decide on shutting it off. For this, all it needs to do is raise the control pin (Base) to high logic. (0 - on / 1 - off)
