If it is a simple optocoupler (no output logic etc.) e.g. PC817 or similar, you can connect it as you described no worry - the base of the optotransistor is floating. The transistor has no way to find out how it is connected.
However, you should check your current to LED, multiply by the worst-case CTR, multiply by the load (here: pulldown) resistor value and you should get more than 5V for a working solution.
