I think you owe it to yourself, after getting the 8 bits update process working, to go out and procure an alternate display that has vertical byte rasters and make an implementation with a one sample at a time update. You may like the apparent difference in "smoothness".

With a small amount of "adaptation" you should be able to try out the difference on a small display just to see the effect.
