Not LCD, but maybe the technique will work here.
I had a case where the calculation of a scrolling display was rather lenghty and I could not get it to jive. Hhe solution was to employ 2 '51s one to calculate what to display which delivered one column to the other per scroll step. The other took care of the dispaly and handled refresh etc.
