#87458 - Don't discount 98 Responding to: ???'s previous message |

I would not discount entirely the 98/ME/NT4 machines. One of the problems Microsoft has been having lately is that not as many people are upgrading to the latest OS as they used to. Mostly, people just move to a new OS when it comes pre-installed on their machine. I realize that Windows 2000 is pretty rock solid (as far as Windows goes anyway) and have observed that many individuals and organizations successfully running Windows 2000 are reluctant to upgrade, unless as you pointed out, the new operating system comes with new hardware (and even this does not necessarily matter in a large corporate environment). What I did not realize, however, is that there is a significant user base for Windows 98/ME/NT4 remaining. According to Microsoft, even security fixes for Windows NT 4.0 are no longer available. And those of us that use Linux and emulate Windows applications have a much better time when it's 98-comaptible. That's what I do. Anything that *requires* XP is something I can't run. Curiously, what do you use when emulating Windows applications? And if you happen to test 89C4x0ldr-lite on it, I would be very interested in hearing how it goes. I'd certainly encourage a Linux version, by the way. Command-line would be perfect for Linux. It would have been a big help recently when I was working with AT89S8252's and DS89C420's. I had a Linux program to do the ISP for the AT89S8252 but I had to go into Windows emulation and run Dallas' MKT program to update their chip via ISP. Not nearly as comfortable. It would not be particularly difficult to make a Linux port of 89C4x0ldr-lite. Obviously, a new Linux version of the serial port class would be needed. Additionally the various message-writing functions would need to be rewritten to use curses rather than the Win32 console API. 89C4x0ldr-lite is the result of a much larger project that I am currently working on that requires a command line loader for a DS89C450 running on Windows XP. Since it is a standalone, fairly general interest component of the project, I thought I would release it for the benefit of the 8052.com community. However, also due to the same large project, I do not currently have time to maintain a native Linux port of 89C4x0ldr-lite. Is anyone interested in actually making/maintaining a port? --Sasha Jevtic |
