I manage to cram 3 processors, RAM 2Mbyte flash and a lot of other stuff on a 2*5" PCB. With todays components, it is amazing how much you can fit in a small place.
I think soon I will have to move on to ARMs I am at present planning to use LPC2124.
That may be a good choice for your "other" tasks, but I would suggest you keep the "precision current regulation" in a separate chip. You will be so much better off.
