I moved to the US the first time in 69 or was it 70 and before that I did a design with 74 series TTL, so not even DTL was "modern" "in the early 70s". HOWEVER, at the same time, I also designed some analog using the 741 which postdates the 709.

I was doing a thick sandwich course with BAe at the time. I joined in Sept 69, did a year in the workshops etc then went to Uni in October 1970. In the long vac of '71 I worked on a design which used the 709 but it could have been a couple of years old by then so that fits in well with Erik's recollection. There was no question of 'upgrading' to the 741 but that could be its poorer performance rather than its availability. BAe was a military developer so the 74 series TTL would not have been used unless the 54 series mil spec versions had been available. It could be the 9000 series DTL was the only mil spec logic available at that time.
