It is essential you use such a diode when driving a solenoid and it needs to be a beefy one too. Something like a 1N5000 series.
For relays and small solenoids (He can not have a large one battery powered) I do quite well with 1N400x diodes and have never blown one. I have never heard of a diode capable of more than supply current (* safety factor) being required. Erik |
