#92454 - CF or not CF Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Dear Michael,
Michael Karas said:
If you regard compact flash cards as totally only ATA disk drive type devices then you are correct most of the time. 1. Sorry, but I am correct all of the time, as I quoted the specs of CF - isn't that the ultimate source of information?! 2. To quote your own words, please have the courtesy to read the pages in the specs I referred to. It describes MEMORY MAPPED access to CF (not ATA). Michael Karas said:
But there are cards of this size & connector format that DO support the linear mode. I never said there are not. I just say, connector, size, material of package - mean nothing in this context. The OP required something that could be easily programmed in a common USB card reader, which - according to your own words - these cards are not. Also I don't think he would be happy to use anything proprietary, not standartised, single source, not easily available locally and several times overpriced. So what exactly was the use of the information you provided to the OP? On the other hand, I provided the information he needed (namely, the word: NO :-) explained the reasons, and added information useful to those possibly attempting to use CFs in future, maybe in conjuncton with '51s. Michael Karas said:
I'll grant you that these things were more prevelant about 10 years ago. I'll bet that, as 11 years ago there were no CFs at all! :-) Michael Karas said:
BUT JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE LESS USED TODAY AND MORE EXPENSIVE DOES NOT MAKE THEM NON EXISISTENT!! Please quote my words where I am saying that PCMCIA/whatewer cards stuffed with FLASH, with any obscure/proprietary interface DON'T EXIST. And please, don't shout, people will be looking at us ;-) Jan Waclawek PS.: The datasheet you gave in your last post, it is clear that it is nothing more than a bunch of FLASH memories in a CF-like package and a voltage regulator (no controller). So just for playing, go down to local shop, buy a cheap CF, bypass the controller using some well deviced cuts and a piece of wire and solder, and you suddenly have a "linear flash, CF form factor" :-D |
