#96078 - slim PICkins
Responding to: ???'s previous message

Adam,

I dare say you'll find that picbasic doesn't use a timer or interrupts for its pulseout feature - it may be done using just loops. I applaud your method of adapting stuff from one micro to another - it may give you more problems in the short term but you'll learn a heap that will benefit you later. I've done a little work with PICs but I consider them a little too stoneage for my liking, but Microchip keep coming out with new product with some nifty features and low prices so maybe they might entice me yet - maybe! Thank goodness that there are a lot more choices available now that keep me away from Sir PIC.

One thing that really irked me about the marketing of the PIC was that it was described as being a RISC cpu - reduced instruction set maybe but not RISC as the term implies. RISC cpus are not accumulator based. When the PIC was designed (mid 70's) they had to make it dumb to make it fit on the silicon. Microchip bought it from the ashes of General Instrument and converted it to cmos and did a brilliant marketing job. The rest is history.
