I read the doc on the PCA and it looks like it would be very handy for this application. Unfortunately my MCU doesn't have it.

I suggest you spend the $7. While what you want, indeed, may be possible using T2 (if your derivative has a T2) and marginally possible with t1 or t0, using a PCA makes it a breeze. The worry about deviating from the original PIG Basic, is not real, a "pulsout" ius still an emulation whether PCA or timer based.

Nope, the Rx2 chips are ISP (In System Programmable) Atmel Flip, Philips FlashMagic, both free.
