I am pretty sure the 8255 there is simulated in an FPGA. The 8255 is a very limited part, which does not easily for example support bi-directional I/O on its pins, which of course the 8052 can do with ease.


In the same way, the fastest modern PC is still "based on the 82C55", because thats how the original PC speaker was driven. So, deep down, there is something even now which is configured like an 8255, but its not an 8255.
