however, the odd/even will disappear using TH. I just now realize that I missed the 'change to interrupt' in which case the odd/even should disappear.

And TH is overflowing more slowly which means distribution of the event will have more influence. How fast can you press the button repeatedly? And what is the distribution of the interval?
the op stated "a random number so I see no problem with repeated keyprsses, the first detect should simply disable the interrupt..
