Sure. I am using the AT89STK-05 starter kit. You can download the hardware for the link below. Refre to section 3.1 for in-system programing.

I can't remember much. I think I did send an email to atmel about using RS-232 to program the chip (using the starter kit). Their answer is no. (Not so sure about this, I lost my mail on this). I am using USB to program and is it quite sometime I didn't use it. Hope this will help
