As Jan says, RS485 is specifically designed for "multi-drop" applications, and is readily available for PCs:

An alternative is just to add more COM ports to your PC - whether as PCI (or ISA) cards in a desktop PC, or PC Card (aka "PCMCIA"), or USB-to-RS232 adaptors.

FTDI have a dual USB-to-Serial adaptor:
