MMIO means, you have some hardware, which acts fully identical (timing, connection) like SRAM from the 8051 view.

Then it can be connected and accessed like SRAM (MOVX instructions).

Some of these are the SJA1000 (CAN) or LAN91C96 (Ethernet) with the address latch already internal.
