Checkout the SiLabs Mass Storage Ref Design. It comes with packaged firmware that can do pretty much what you want (though you'll have to tailor it a bit). Good luck displaying .xls data on an LCD driven from an 8051. I'm assuming (because excel is "pretty") that you want a bitmapped color display? If so you should kiss your 8051 good by (especially if you wanted to do the mass storage firmware on the same uController) and look at fast ARMs or fpgas.
