our programmers have 6 ~4"*4" cards inside stuffed with circuitry.

This is NOT something to take lightly, if it was, the professional grade programmers would not cost the bundle they do.

Go ahead and make your kitchen table "programmer", but do not expect any degree of universality from it, and hope you can make it work for, at least, one chip.

WHY, OH WHY are so many trying to make kitchen table programmers is the existence of ISP such a secret?
