Yep, things have been getting progressively worse on the server for some time but really reached a critical stage on Monday. That's when I started taking action.

It actually still looks like the problem isn't the search function, but we got the server load down to where it should be. So since Tuesday (yesterday) the server load is back into the "green" zone and seems to be very responsive. We're going to let it run another day or two like this and then start enabling things we've disabled and see when the load goes up again.
