When I hear someone refer to a character LCD, I have to conclude he's referring to something more or less typical. If you don't think the HD44780 is typical for character LCD's, particularly when the O/P is using terminology (CGRAM) straight out of the HD44780 datasheet, where does that lead you? If you search the 8052.COM site for LCD references, few of them, aside, perhaps, from the ones referring to graphic LCD's, address anything other than the typical HD44780 (or clone thereof) interface.

I know you constantly whine about the pinout, but I'll bet that fewer than 10% of the character LCD market uses other than "typical" Hitachi/Seiko/Sharp connector pinout.

I know you can't tolerate the risk that you won't be "right" about whatever you say, but please, try to be reasonable.
