If you don't think the HD44780 is typical for character LCD's,

Oh, it's typical.

It/was is also 'typical' to power a uC with 5V would you make a generalization about that and make some poor sod burn his 3V3 chip?

Where does "answering when you ASS U ME that the case is 'typical'" stop and where are no such assumnptions allowed? The border should be absolute, but evidently you, who otherwise come across as quite rigid, have flexibility here.
