My suggestion was offered up as something to try. The idea of setting the data nibble and RS signal lines ahead by one code line as I suggested permits the whole interface to hopefully be quiet before the EN pulse comes. This could be helpful in instances where the LCD module is coupled to the controller board in a manner that is less than optimal. Changing all the signals at once like your code does could be compromising data integrity at/in the LCD module display controller. Extra signal ringing of the interface can case the display controller logic to to hang.
