That is an approach, but then you are limiting yourself. I do projects that I find interesting and sometimes the project is not suited to an 8051.

The example I used there was a bit broad. I did a garage door controller about 2 years ago. Board space was a problem and I needed a timer and a ADC. Price was also a major concern as it was going to be a high volume product. I used and PIC12CE674. 8 pin device interal RC, ADC and timer and I used a 74HC595 serial to parallel latch to extend the out pins. That came to a processor with ADC and output latch for under $1
