We are talking XY here aren't we ? Don't see how you can image your thing without more than one led. You could do it with a matrix of 'em though, and if the numbers are right, it COULD be made bullet proof.

How about some cheap method with aquadag painted onto two clingfilm (saran wrap) membranes. You can read the resistance of the films very easily even with a <retch>PIC
