Why not capture the target with a CCD camera and analyse it with a FFT algoritme for both X and Y vectors. his should give you the correct hit positions.

When doing so on a pentium, you can afford a lot of additional tools.

Check on the labview site for more technical information (graphical programming tool). They have a lot of CCD tools available, like pattern recognition.
