I think the source of this is confusion between ROM and RAM access. The Rx2 accesses ROM when out of internal ROM. It accesses RAM based on the EXTRAM bit in the AUXR regardless of the address. So to talk to 8000 external you must (temporarily) change the EXTRAM bit
