You haven't stated specifically what you are using to clock the display ( like the E line on HD44780 LCD's)? If you are using WR* does the pulse length satisfy the display requirements? On HD44780's E has to be high 450ns before going low. If you are running at 20Mhz on your 'RD2 then the WR* pulse is somewhere around 50ns, per the datasheet.
