I think that was a "slip of the tongue" or more rightly "key" regarding i8255 being characterized for the "x86" when it was really the 8080 series. Your point regarding the "applicability" of the i8255 for current '51 devices is rightly made as even the old 8085 manual warns you of required delays between accessing device registers. So it's easy to make the argument against using the '8255 in any production design. As to "hobby" designs i feel less predjudiced but your observation that many problems can be traced to use of the part by folks unfamiliar with it's "warts" is a good one. This is double trouble as "hobby" designs are often implemented by folks who are learning and may spend a lot of time debugging code or other periph's when the old 8255 is really the culprit. regards, p |
