For simple, straightforward LED interfaces I recommend the ST2221 (comes in several flavors (A and more)).
The chip is a serially driven LED driver chip and the LEDs are driven constant current based on ONE external resistor per chip.
The chips are cascadeable (In one application I use 224 2221A in 3 cascades driving 1792 LEDs.
