You told everything from sub circuits to cooling with fingers ( incidentally are you cold blooded by chance ?!) . You forgot to tell one thing - that is the unregulated DC to the input of the 7805. It should just be around 8V DC to 9VDC . Any thing lower, the ripple will start climbing and anything more, the 7805 will become a heater. Please read the data sheet.
The second thing is the total power drawn off - the 7805 with a GOOD heat sink can handle just about 1 Amp. Calculate the Power Handling capacity = ( Input DC - Output DC )x Load in Amps. Then you will know where you stand as compared to the figure in the data sheet. Hope that helps Raghu |
