The key word my other post you quoted is: allows. By this I meant to say that it is possible to have lower power dissipation with a LDO, because it can operate with a lower input voltage. Perhaps I should have made this more clear. "It is impossible for a linear regulator to dissipate almost 13 watts continuously without heating up."
