Did you post your question on Cygnal's user forum?

I just checked the datasheet for the MAX232 and the Vih is specified as 2V min. This means you can connect it to your controller directly. No level shifting or pull-up needed.

PS Have you read Cygnal's application note AN011? It tells you all you need to know about interfacing 3V - 5V
