300 to 500 terminals. Well this in the league of a SCADA system, with distributed I/O. And once here, you have various options like the ControlNet or the DeviceNet besides the familiar EtherNet. And with this many number of terminals you would do well to go with a proven protocol and with hardware from a MNC. Afterall networking is interesting but living peacefully is even more essential.
