Even if I pass that through a monostable multivibrator? I guess I can limit the rate with it - In this case multiple signals will just overlap, I will get one leading edge on start of the event you describe and one trailing when it ends. I might lose some counts if it moves really fast, but then, I don't plan to move it really fast.
