Ok lets forget talking about printer drivers. Check out this postscript formatting board. You'll get an idea of how intensive it is....

A very good friend of mine worked at Data Products, the printer company, for a long time. For a number of years his job was to re-package postscript formatter boards from one of several vendors. These vendors built these things as reference designs and wrote the 100's of KBytes of code for them, special licenses required of course too, and crammed them with multi-megabytes of DRAM. His re-packaging and adapting the code to work with a Data Products laser platform(s) was no small feat in itself!! The processors used at the time were specialized high frequency things made on ASICs that had certain special features to speed up the postscript drawing engine into the print image buffers in DRAM. Part of the challenge was to make the formatter able to keep up with printer mechanisms that could roll through 8 then 12 then 15 then 17 them 20 pages per minute. No small potatoes!! Guess what....Data Products as the printer vendor knew exactly how the printer back end worked so it went from postscript to ONE kind of printer.

If you ventured out to build your dongle it would have to support various types of printers .... I'm going to guess you would once again get capital SICK of making printer drivers for your dongle to go from postscript to dozens of different types of printer protocols.
