Overkill in what way? I find CPLD's more easy to use becouse an JTAG interface. And as far as i know all the 3.3V devices have 5V tolerant pins, but yes the second 3.3V supply is not so useful.
Xilinx also has its own line of 5V devices the XC9500 series, i have used those to replace a lot of glue logic in my projects. But you can use them to make complex things, like DRAM interfaces, VGA clock generators and much more. And best of all they are quite cheap, 3 euro's for an 36 macrocell device (XC9536XL PLCC44 ) and 5 euros for an 72 Cell device (XC9572XL PLCC44). |
